I need a website written, what can I get for my money?

So, you need website content written. What’s your first question? Aside from “are you competent?”. I would guess that your question might be “how much is this going to cost me?”. It’s a fair question. Details of my day rate are in my FAQs. You’ll see that I charge £385.00/day for copywriting. Great! That’s around the industry average, not suspiciously cheap but not scarily expensive either.

But hold on! What does this even mean? If I take one day to write your website, that would be a bargain. But what if I take a whole month?! The day rate information is useful to get a sense of my experience, but doesn’t really give you the answer to the crucial question - how much?

How long is a piece of string? That’s basically the problem here. I won’t be able to price up your quote until I have all the details from you.

  • How many pages?

  • How much research?

  • Do you want me to write a few general webpages, or your (all important) Homepage?

  • Landing pages are very specific, but content for your website is less intensive, is that what you need?

  • Does anyone need to be interviewed as part of the content research?

All of these answers will have an impact on how long I anticipate (based on previous experience) your project will take. The days I quote may also be spread over several months as I await feedback, further information, and final sign off.

A day rate isn’t really that useful to you at the early stage of deciding whether to add me to your list of potential copywriters to contact. What I thought would be useful for you, is to see how much I have quoted for a few past projects, just so you can get a rough sense of what you can get for your budget.

What can I get for my money?

My day rate for copywriting is £385.00 per day.

Just to give you some idea of what this means, I recently wrote website copy (alongside writing three different prospectuses) for a performing arts specialist university based just outside London.

I wrote three separate website landing pages (longer, more detailed, SEO-led webpages for an undergraduate, postgraduate, and international student audience). I would anticipate any webpages that had any substantial content requiring research would also be around a similar price.

Research and discovery - 1 day
Copywriting - 3 days
Re-writes - 1 day
Final proofreading - 0.5 days

Three landing pages = 5.5 days (£2,117.50)

In addition to this, I also wrote three further webpages outlining their webinar offering for UG, PG, and international student audiences. These were much shorter, and any research and discovery had already been completed in the landing page quote.

Three short informational webpages = 1.5 days (£577.50).

As you can hopefully see, the time taken for the webpages depended on the length of each of the pages, and time taken to research. I can also help you with the structure of the website if you need that and give ideas on what pages might be useful and how they might all link together.

Are you competent?

The majority of my website writing experience has been in-house as a Marketing Manager at the following places:

  • LSE Enterprise (commercial arm of The London School of Economics and Political Science). I wrote and maintained the website pages for their customised executive education offering, alongside ad hoc programmes.

  • LSE Communications Division, branding pages.

  • UCM Education - a small recruitment company targeting the education sector. I wrote and edited the content for a new 15-page website for this company as in-house Marketing Manager on a short-term contract. The complete website overhaul included all website content, GDPR-compliant web forms, URLs, title tags and meta descriptions, and image alt texts.

Freelance experience: The Department of Methodology (LSE); Executive Education (LSE); Department of Government (LSE); Rose Bruford College - landing pages for undergraduate, postgraduate, and international students (pages unfortunately not live yet).

Details of the projects and PDF links can be found on my Website Copy and Content portfolio webpage.

Business to business

The examples given above are more from the higher education side, but if you are a business it might be useful for you to see some of the B2B work that I’ve done on my B2B Copywriting and Editing webpage.
